Komodo Boat Charter

Komodo Photography Charter

Light, location, timing — an itinerary planned around golden hour at each iconic viewpoint, with drone-friendly anchorages and dedicated underwater photography sites.

In Short

A photography charter sets the boat’s schedule to the light, not the convenience of the crew. You arrive at Padar before any other boat, set up the drone over Pink Beach in the late afternoon, dive Manta Alley in the middle of the day for maximum surface light, and capture Gili Lawa’s sunset ridge with a tripod set up properly.

A Schedule Designed Around Light
01

A Schedule Designed Around Light

Most Komodo charters time their stops around what is convenient for the crew. A photography charter inverts the priority. The captain plans tides and anchorages around: pre-dawn arrival at Padar, soft-light snorkel at Pink Beach in late afternoon, golden-hour ridge walk on Gili Lawa, and a careful tidal window for the Castle Rock topside drone pass without disturbing dive operations.

On-Board Setup for Photographers
02

On-Board Setup for Photographers

Camera-prep table with multi-outlet power on the main saloon; rinse buckets and a fresh-water tap on the dive deck for housings; dedicated dry-bag storage; tripod-friendly bow rail; lockable cabin storage; reliable 220V for laptops and battery charging; and on most vessels a 12 megapixel underwater camera available for non-professional companions on the charter.

Drone, Underwater, and Wildlife Rules
03

Drone, Underwater, and Wildlife Rules

Drone flying inside Komodo National Park requires a permit and is restricted near dragon habitat and on Pink Beach itself. We pre-arrange permits where possible and route around restricted zones. Underwater photography in marine areas is fully allowed (no flash within 1 m of mantas). Wildlife shooting on Komodo and Rinca is allowed at standard tourist distance under ranger supervision.

Photography Hot Spots

The Frames You Will Bring Home

Padar three-bay sunrise

The defining shot of Komodo. Best 06:00–06:45 in dry season. Wide angle, ND grad recommended.

Gili Lawa sunset ridge

Panoramic ridge above a sheltered anchorage. Best at 17:30–18:15. Tripod-friendly.

Kalong fruit-bat exodus

Million bats lift off at last light. Best from the boat with a fast 70–200mm.

Manta Alley underwater

Reliable cleaning station. Wide-angle, fish-eye, no flash within 1m. Mid-day surface light is ideal.

Komodo dragons

Best on Rinca, morning light, 200mm+ for tight head shots.

Astro from a remote anchorage

Zero light pollution. Milky Way visible 21:00–01:00 most nights of the dry season.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

Can I fly a drone in Komodo?

Outside the park: freely. Inside the park: with a permit, and not over dragon habitat or directly above Pink Beach. We pre-arrange permits where required.

02

Best month for Komodo photography?

June–September for clearest light and calmest seas. May and October are excellent shoulder months with fewer charter boats in the same anchorages.

03

Can I bring my own underwater housing?

Yes — the dive deck has a dedicated rinse tank and chamois. Charge sockets, lockable storage, and laptop space for processing on the saloon table.

04

Can a guide be added to the charter?

Yes — we can arrange an on-board professional photographer to lead the workflow, run a one-day workshop, or simply unblock you on specific shots. Daily rate from USD 350.
