Rinca Island

A less-crowded alternative for dragon spotting — higher dragon density, shorter walk, accessible terrain, and closer to Labuan Bajo than Komodo Island.

In Short

Rinca is the second of the two main “dragon islands” in Komodo National Park — smaller than Komodo Island, closer to Labuan Bajo, with higher dragon density per kilometre of trail and a brand-new visitor centre opened in 2022.

Why Many Charter Guests Prefer Rinca
01

Why Many Charter Guests Prefer Rinca

Rinca has higher dragon density per kilometre of trail than Komodo Island — meaning more sightings in less walking time. The terrain is rolling and easier than Komodo’s longer routes, and the modern visitor centre opened in 2022 includes an elevated walkway that lets you observe dragons safely from above. For families with young children and for short 2D1N and 3D2N charters, Rinca is the more practical choice.

The Loh Buaya Visitor Centre
02

The Loh Buaya Visitor Centre

Loh Buaya, on Rinca’s eastern shore, is the visitor entry point. The 2022 redevelopment added an elevated boardwalk through the savannah, allowing wheelchairs and travellers with limited mobility to access viewing points that were previously inaccessible. The walkway also keeps a buffer between guests and dragons resting in the shade of the boardwalk supports — you regularly look down to see dragons under your feet.

Wildlife Beyond the Dragons
03

Wildlife Beyond the Dragons

Rinca shelters Timor deer (the dragon’s main prey), wild boar, long-tailed macaques, and remarkable birdlife including the orange-footed scrubfowl and the white-bellied sea eagle. Marine life around Rinca’s coast includes turtles, reef sharks, and seasonal manta passes — the snorkel sites at Sebayur and Siaba lie just to the north.

Practical Info

Visiting Rinca Island

Best Time

Morning 07:00–10:00 for active dragons and gentler heat. Afternoon visits possible but hotter.

Trek Choice

Short 45-min loop is plenty for most guests — you will see multiple dragons. Medium 90-min loop adds savannah views.

Accessible

New boardwalk allows wheelchair access to viewing platforms — the only dragon-island site that does.

Ranger

Mandatory park-ranger escort for the whole trek — standard procedure, included in trek fees.

Photography

Elevated boardwalk gives top-down dragon shots that ground-level Komodo treks cannot.

Fees

Same park rates as Komodo Island — entrance + ranger fee covered by the standard park ticket.

Rinca Island FAQ

01

Komodo Island or Rinca — which should I pick?

For 4D3N+ charters: do both (different days). For 2D1N/3D2N or family trips: Rinca alone — higher dragon density, shorter walk, easier terrain.

02

Will I definitely see dragons?

Multiple dragons in the morning, virtually guaranteed. By midday many dragons retreat to shade and sightings drop — early mornings are best.

03

Can children visit?

Yes — Rinca is the family-friendly dragon-island choice. Kids age 5+ handle the short loop easily.

04

Is Rinca on every charter?

Most charters visit either Komodo or Rinca; 4D3N+ charters often include both. Confirm on your itinerary.
