A family boat charter is a private vessel hire designed specifically for travelling with children — the same iconic Komodo route, on a boat selected and outfitted to keep kids safe, fed, and genuinely entertained from morning anchor to bedtime.
Not every phinisi or yacht is set up for children. The boats we recommend share a checklist: safety mesh in place of railings on lower decks, no unguarded steep stairs between levels, child life jackets in every size, kid-size snorkel masks, a chef briefed on child-friendly meals, and a crew with hosting experience for kids.
Family itineraries swap rougher transits for shorter hops between sheltered anchorages, prioritise shallow snorkeling sites where children can stand on sandy bottom, and never push past 18:00 to a new anchorage. The Rinca Island dragon trek replaces the longer Komodo Island walk — shorter trail, often closer dragon encounters, fewer crowds. Padar sunrise becomes optional. Late mornings are slower.
Beyond the obvious wildlife highlights: SUP and kayak time in a calm bay, the dinghy ride between island stops, fishing off the back of the boat at anchor, a chef-led cooking demo, an evening movie on the sun deck, and the magic of a starry sky with zero light pollution.
Every size from toddler to teen, USCG-rated, on board before you arrive.
Child-size masks, fins, and snorkel-vests so the kids actually wear them.
Chef briefed before arrival — pasta, chicken, fresh fruit, anything your kids eat.
Included on most family-recommended boats — the favourite kid activity by Day 2.
Optional half-day on-board shoot for the trip’s memory wall.
Connecting cabins, extra mattresses, child cot on request.
No formal minimum. From age 4–5 most children love it. For under-3s we recommend the shorter 2D1N or 3D2N formats.
Yes, with park rangers on every trek. Children walk between the ranger and the parent. We recommend Rinca over Komodo Island for families.
Always — brief the chef when booking and again on Day 1. We’ve hosted families with celiac, vegan, and only-pasta-and-nuggets kids without drama.
Low in dry season (Apr–Oct) on properly sized vessels. Bring kids’ motion-sickness wristbands or syrup just in case.
