Best Month to Visit Komodo in 2027: Weather, Seas & Crowd Calendar

July 13, 2026 · Anita Ayu Rustyaningtyas

April–June and September–November give Komodo its calmest seas, best underwater visibility and moderate crowds — the two windows our captains recommend first. July–August is peak season with premium rates and full anchorages, while December–March brings dramatic green hills, lower prices and daily sailing decisions made by the harbor master.

Komodo does not have a bad month — it has different months, and the right one depends on what you are optimizing for: flat seas, manta odds, empty viewpoints, green landscapes or price. This calendar from KomodoBoatCharter lays out the whole year for 2027, month by month, so you can match your dates to the trip you actually want.

Which months have the calmest seas?

The dry season runs roughly April through November, and inside it two windows stand out: April–June and September–November. These shoulder stretches combine the calmest crossings, the best underwater visibility and moderate crowds — the reason experienced operators name them first when asked for the best time to charter. Larger phinisi ride dry-season swell smoothly, which also makes these months the safest bet for anyone prone to seasickness.

When is peak season — and should you avoid it?

July–August and Indonesian public holidays are peak: the most boats at every anchorage, premium pricing, and vessels reserved far in advance. Demand for private phinisi and yachts concentrates across the whole April–October dry season, so lead times matter — book private boats 3–6 months ahead, and 6–12 months ahead for June–August departures. If those are your only possible dates, go: the weather is reliable and everything runs. If you can shift three weeks either side, you keep the weather and lose most of the crowds. Fleet options and 2027 rates by boat class are on our Komodo yacht charter page.

When is manta season?

Manta rays appear at Manta Point through much of the year, but local operators consistently highlight April–June and September–November as the prime windows for near-guaranteed snorkel encounters — conveniently the same months as the calmest seas. If mantas are the headline of your trip, plan inside those windows and give the itinerary at least one flexible morning so the captain can time the site around conditions. The full month-by-month breakdown is in our manta ray season guide.

What is the green season really like?

December–March flips the postcard. The brown hills turn deep green, the light gets dramatic, charter rates drop roughly 20–40%, and you can have anchorages to yourself. The trade-offs are real: rain comes and goes, seas run rougher, and the harbor master decides day by day whether boats sail — boats do go out in light-to-moderate rain, but flexibility is part of the deal. For travelers who value price and solitude over guaranteed flat water, it is the smartest-value stretch of the year; we cover it fully in our Komodo green season guide.

How do charter prices change through the year?

Three tiers, in practice. Peak (July–August plus holiday dates like Christmas and New Year) commands premium rates and the least negotiating room. The dry-season shoulders (April–June, September–November) hold standard pricing with far better availability. The wet season (December–March, outside holidays) brings the year’s lowest rates — roughly 20–40% below dry-season pricing — plus the widest choice of boats. Whichever tier you land in, budget the park’s fees separately: roughly IDR 400,000–550,000 per foreign visitor per day, paid in cash and handled by your crew.

Does the park ever close?

No. Komodo National Park stays open year-round — there is no seasonal closure. What changes is the daily go/no-go: the harbor master reviews wind and wave conditions each morning, and licensed captains follow BMKG marine forecasts. In the wet season that means the occasional postponed departure, typically rescheduled or refunded; in the dry season it is close to a formality. Boats also sail in light-to-moderate rain — a passing shower does not cancel a trip.

What else should shape your 2027 dates?

Two practical factors beyond weather. First, flights: Labuan Bajo now has direct regional connections — Scoot flies from Singapore twice weekly and AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur three times weekly, alongside the year-round one-hour hop from Bali — so long-weekend trips work best when your charter dates align with those flight days. Second, the calendar’s fine print: Indonesian national-park tariffs run higher on Sundays and public holidays, and domestic holiday periods fill boats even in otherwise quiet months, so a Tuesday departure in early June can beat a Saturday departure in the same week on both price and crowds. If seasickness worries you, stack the odds: pick a larger phinisi, sail in the April–September dry months, and carry motion-sickness tablets — bigger hulls in calm season ride noticeably smoother than small speedboats.
