A Lombok to Komodo boat charter is one of the most spectacular sailing routes in Indonesia, taking you through the heart of the Lesser Sunda Islands on a multi-day voyage across pristine waters, past volcanic peaks, and through some of the richest marine environments in the Coral Triangle. This route is an adventure in itself — not just a way to reach Komodo National Park, but a complete island-hopping experience through Sumbawa, Moyo Island, Satonda crater lake, and the straits between Flores and Komodo.
The journey from Lombok to Komodo covers approximately 350 nautical miles and typically takes 3-5 days depending on your vessel, route preferences, and how many stops you make along the way. Unlike the standard approach of flying from Bali to Labuan Bajo and chartering locally, the Lombok sailing route transforms the transit into the highlight of your trip — every day brings new islands, new dive sites, and new experiences.
The Journey Is the Destination: While flying to Labuan Bajo takes one hour, the Lombok-Komodo sailing route introduces you to islands and marine sites that 99% of Komodo visitors never see. Moyo Island’s waterfall spilling into the sea, Satonda Island’s volcanic crater lake with thousands of fruit bats, Sangeang Api’s underwater volcanic vents — these are legitimate once-in-a-lifetime experiences available only to those who take the sea route.
Gili Islands Departure Option: Many guests begin their Lombok-Komodo voyage from the Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, or Gili Meno) — Indonesia’s famous beach and diving destination. Starting from the Gilis means you combine two world-class marine destinations in a single trip without any flights or airport transfers between them.
Fewer Crowds, More Wilderness: The waters between Lombok and Komodo see a fraction of the boat traffic found within Komodo National Park itself. You’ll anchor in bays and dive on reefs that feel genuinely undiscovered.
One-Way Convenience: Many travelers visit Bali, then Gili Islands, then want to reach Komodo. The sailing route from Lombok/Gili to Komodo eliminates the need to backtrack to Bali for a flight to Labuan Bajo — you sail east continuously, ending in Labuan Bajo for your onward flight.
Depart from Lombok’s Senggigi harbour or Gili Trawangan. Sail east across the Alas Strait to reach Moyo Island by afternoon. Moyo Island is a protected nature reserve famous for its pristine coral reefs and the spectacular Air Terjun Mata Jitu — a multi-tiered waterfall cascading through turquoise pools in the jungle. Snorkel the untouched reefs along Moyo’s southern coast. Anchor overnight in a sheltered bay with jungle-covered hills rising directly from the shoreline.
Morning snorkel at Moyo, then sail to Satonda Island — a unique volcanic island with a saltwater crater lake at its centre. The island is surrounded by vibrant reef and is home to a massive fruit bat colony that creates a surreal dusk spectacle as millions of bats depart for their nightly feeding. The snorkeling around Satonda’s outer rim is exceptional. Continue to anchor near Sumbawa’s north coast.
Sail past Sangeang Api — an active volcanic island visible from 50+ nautical miles. Underwater, volcanic vents create hot springs on the seafloor surrounded by unique marine ecosystems. Diving here is surreal — bubbles rising from black sand, unusual critters adapted to the warm water, and pristine hard coral formations. Continue east toward Bima Bay for overnight anchoring.
Cross the Sape Strait into Komodo waters. Your first Komodo stop could be Gili Banta — a remote island at the park’s western edge with dramatic walls, strong currents, and regular shark encounters. Or head directly to the northern park corridor for your first Padar Island sunset. From here, your Komodo exploration begins in earnest.
Spend 3-7 additional days exploring Komodo’s highlights: Padar viewpoint, Komodo dragon treks, Pink Beach, Manta Point, Taka Makassar, Gili Lawa, Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, Batu Bolong, and southern sites. End your voyage in Labuan Bajo.

The optimal sailing window is April to October when winds are manageable, seas are calm, and visibility peaks. July-September offers the best overall conditions. The route is not recommended from December to February when strong westerly winds and swells make the Alas Strait crossing uncomfortable on smaller vessels.
This route requires vessels capable of multi-day open water sailing. We recommend phinisi boats of 25 metres or larger, motor yachts with stabilizers, or expedition liveaboards. Speedboats are not suitable for this route due to the distance and sea conditions. Browse our fleet of 75+ vessels filtered for long-range capability.
The transit portion takes 3-4 days with stops at Moyo Island, Satonda, and Sumbawa. Total trip duration including Komodo exploration ranges from 5-10 days depending on how much time you want in the national park.
Yes — Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno are all popular departure points. The boat picks you up directly from the island, eliminating any need to transfer back to Lombok mainland.
Yes, with an experienced captain and appropriate vessel. The waters between Lombok and Komodo include some open sea crossings (Alas Strait, Sape Strait) that require proper seamanship. All our vessels are equipped with modern navigation, safety equipment, and captains who know these waters intimately.
The sailing route costs more than a flight-based charter because it includes 3-4 extra days of vessel hire. However, you gain extraordinary experiences (Moyo, Satonda, Sangeang Api) that are unavailable to fly-in visitors. Many guests consider the sailing route the highlight of their entire Indonesia trip.
Absolutely. The Komodo-to-Lombok route is equally spectacular and allows you to begin with Komodo highlights before sailing west through the islands toward Lombok or the Gili Islands for a beach finish.
